An early morning stroll through Lagos hints towards an exciting prospect: a bustle of activity characterizes the operations at the local computer village in Ikeja, where transactions of all kinds involving computers churn and burn incessantly. The talented individuals who call this place their workplace harbor distinctive tech skills that often surpass the capabilities of regular IT staff in many organizations. Tragically, their potential is often cloistered due to the absence of formal training, which is a prerequisite to earning the certificates that could land them a stable career. This unfortunate scenario is mirrored across the African continent, from Johannesburg to Nairobi.

However, the winds of change are beginning to sweep across the continent. Enter Andela: a platform that collaborates with local developers to provide certification and connect them with potential employment opportunities. Emboldened by the promise of Andela’s success, Google has made an ambitious resolution: the tech behemoth aims to provide digital training to a whopping 1 million Africans in the foreseeable future.

Google’s partner in this ambitious initiative is Livity Africa, an organization that has made strides in empowering African youth through innovative, impactful projects. Their shared endeavor seeks to equip Africans with a myriad of digital skills, a beacon of hope against the backdrop of the continent’s grim unemployment rates. A Bloomberg report discloses the plan in detail: Google will conduct training programs for 300,000 South Africans, a significant move considering the 35% unemployment rate among 15-to-34-year-olds in the country. Additionally, 400,000 Nigerians and 200,000 Kenyans will be afforded access to free digital training. Another 100,000 individuals will be selected from across other sub-Saharan Africa nations.

Livity Africa’s website provides a glimpse into the methodology of the training. Known as Digify Pro, this unique and innovative training journey is tailored to create an entirely new generation of digital savvy individuals who are ready to conquer the job market. As part of an immersive three-month initiation process, trainees are introduced to a real-world working environment, where they can fine-tune their skills for professional life. The training extends its focus to a wide array of digital tools, including Google Search, AdWords, YouTube, and Analytics. Career guidance is provided to assist trainees in identifying their ideal path in the digital realm, with full-time jobs or internships lined up upon completion of the program.

The basis of the initiative is Google’s grand worldwide program that aims to empower individuals with digital skills. And with the impending ascent of automation and developments in computer technology such as Artificial Intelligence, these training programs act as a buffer, anchoring the relevance and demand for core tech jobs. The emergence of this digital revolution could be the catalyst to secure Africa’s digital future while making the continent a major player in the global tech workforce.
