The Journey to 5G Technology: An Expected Reality by 2020

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has officially declared IMT-2020 as the definitive term for the future of telecommunications, better known as 5G.

The decision came after a round of deliberations by ITU-R Working Party 5D, a faction of the United Nation’s telecommunications arm, at a summit held in San Diego, California. There, the future of 5G was discussed extensively, resulting in a formulated [5G vision](https://www.techbooky.com/post-title/think-4g-is-fast-enough-meet-the-5g-technology/) that stamps 5G technology as IMT-2020.

The ITU, in an announcement made last Friday, disclosed that subsequent steps would involve drawing up meticulous technical performance demands for radio systems in support of the anticipated 5G. This process will take into account a broad spectrum of future scenarios and use instances.

Following this, the ITU plans to define its evaluation criteria for assessing applicant radio interface technologies.

“The interest within the industry towards the next evolution in mobile technology – 5G – has seen a massive surge. It is now largely centered on creating a seamlessly linked society in the 2020 timeline, engendering smart networked communications that unify individuals, data, applications, transport systems, and entire cities,” remarked ITU Secretary General Houlin Zhao.

It may be too soon to say that an overwhelming enthusiasm for 5G has crested, hinting at more still to come.

Japan, notably, preemptively announced its plans for having 5G networks operational in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, even before a clear understanding of 5G was established within the industry.

Since then, telecommunication players have consolidated a list of desired 5G features. However, the industry is still navigating the process of implementing these capabilities.

Despite the ongoing research and uncertainties, South Korea has vowed to debut ‘pre-standard’ 5G in tandem with the PyeongChang Winter Olympics in 2018, a full two years before the ITU is slated to finalize the 5G standard.

The advancements and implications of 5G technology continue to capture global attention, with nations striving for innovation. The path to 5G is paved with potential, and only time will tell how this game-changing technology impacts our connected world.
