Android, the dominating player in the realm of smartphone operating systems, might be common knowledge for most. However, there are interesting facets about Android’s history and functionality which remain under the radar of the average user.

Based on data from www.cio.com, let’s dive deeper into Android’s development with these eight lesser-known facts.

• It wasn’t initially Google’s brainchild: Andy Rubin, the creator of Android Inc. in October 2003, envisioned a novel mobile platform. Google, recognizing its potential, eventually acquired Android Inc. in August 2005, bringing Rubin and his team onboard.
• A close call survival story: Soon after its inception, Android Inc. depleted its financial resources. The startup was rescued from collapse by Steve Perlman, as per Businessweek.

• The Nexus line was foreseen way before Nexus One emerged: Speculations about the anticipated “gPhone” circulated as early as 2007, three years prior to the launch of the Nexus in 2010.

• Microsoft initially underestimated Android’s impact: Post-Android’s release, Scott Horn, formerly heading Windows Mobile marketing team, admitted to Engadget, “I don’t understand the impact they are going to have.”

• Introduction of resolution scaling in Version 1.6: The auto-scaling of images based on display size was implemented in Donut, or Android 1.6. This groundwork allowed the platform to accommodate Android’s diversifying device form factors.

• An Android phone was launched into space: In an experimental endeavor, a British firm sent a Nexus phone into space to control a satellite and test the durability of consumer-level electronics against space’s harsh environment.

• Every running app on your Android phone operates in an independent virtual machine: Each operational app on an Android device functions within its Dalvik VM, maintaining an isolation from the core device processes. This enhances the phone’s performance and prolongs battery life.

• The very first version code name was not modeled on a dessert: Dan Morrill from Google revealed that the first alpha version of Android delivered to internal developers went by the moniker R2-D2.
