The importance of reliable and effective communication within a business structure, particularly in an emerging economy, is undisputed. This has prompted Africa’s Talking Limited, a mobile technology firm, to team up with 9Mobile, formerly known as Etisalat, to provide application programming interfaces (APIs) to small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) in Africa, according to a report by Punch.

With its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, Africa’s Talking Limited is focused on delivering high-quality technical solutions via mobile technology. Their services cater particularly to tech start-ups and SMEs. In keeping with this focus, they have partnered with Nigeria’s 9Mobile to further empower Nigerian software developers and help SMEs more efficiently reach their customers across multiple communication platforms.

9Mobile’s Digital Business Director, Adia Sowho, believes that their collaboration with Africa’s Talking API platform will generate significant positive impact on their sales through effective marketing strategies.

“Developers will be able to access and build innovative applications while the SMEs can use the platform to improve their marketing capabilities. We at 9Mobile are delighted to partner with Africa’s Talking in our bid to support Nigerian software developers and small businesses as they build viable and scalable businesses”

What exactly is an API?

In the realm of software development, API stands for Application Programming Interface. Simply put, it’s a set of commands that one program can send to another, allowing them to communicate. When you type a website URL, such as www.techbooky.com, into your browser, a request is sent to the website’s remote server. Once your browser receives the server’s response, it interprets the code and displays the website. Accordingly, in this interaction, your browser is the client and TechBooky’s server is the API.

APIs are integral for businesses to tailor their software to address user needs. When clients visit their page or website, they interact with the site’s remote server’s API, thus enhancing communication between manufacturers and consumers.

Adia Sowho emphasized that mobile communication has previously proven tremendously beneficial for business owners aiming to maintain meaningful, lasting relationships with both existing and prospective clients.

“It is through this that businesses are able to offer effective customer support, real-time communication solutions, collect relevant data, and optimize their operations. With this solution, SMEs will be able to tap into the local developer community to build systems that enhance business efficiency, leading to job creation and overall support of local talent.”

The 9Mobile director highlighted that the underlying purpose of this partnership is to provide easy access for developers. Consequently, individual developers will not have to interface directly with telco-grade products, which she noted, can be a challenging and time-consuming process.

With the introduction of such innovative programming apps, the future looks promising for tech startups and SMEs. The expectation is that businesses will see a substantial increase in sales and overall efficiency, leading to a more streamlined and productive business model.
