A Billion Downloads Later, Temple Run Creator Thinks About the Future

Imangi Studios, creators of the popular game ‘Temple Run’ series, recently celebrated an impressive milestone, achieving a billion downloads. This success has switched the company’s attention towards the future, contemplating the next steps and game strategies. Since its inception in August 2011, the first four games of the series have garnered an unbelievable 216,000 years’ worth of gameplay, demonstrating the power of consistent innovation. Founders Keith Shepherd and Natalia Luckyanova were enthusiastic in recognizing this feat.

In recent discussions, Shepherd revealed that his North Carolina-based team is in the process of conceptualizing new games. They’re focusing both on expanding the popular Temple Run franchise and delving into unique genres. While exact details remain confidential, the eleven dedicated crew members spent the previous year planning these ground-breaking games, directing much of their efforts towards updates for Temple Run 2.

Despite its commitments, Imangi Studios faces challenges in the cut-throat app market, but Shepherd has emphasized their unwavering commitment to creating exceptional gaming experiences. One strategic move includes penetrating the lucrative Chinese market.

Imangi has solidly established itself in China, boasting 36 percent of its players in the region, greater than the 21 percent in the U.S. Parallel to Betaworks’ strategy with its puzzle game ‘Dots,’ Imangi emphasizes the need to conform to China-specific localization regulations. This alignment encompasses integrating local cultural elements into their games, like references to regional pop culture and significant holidays. Accordingly, Imangi is planning to release an update geared towards its Chinese audience, incorporating a player-vs-player competition feature through WeChat, aimed explicitly for the Chinese version of Temple Run.
