Adults Are Restricted From “DMing” Teenagers They Don’t Follow On Instagram

…IG’s “safety prompts” safeguard teenagers from vicious adults.

As Instagram’s users keep up with daily activities online, the social community also becomes a safer place to socialize. Once again, Instagram is updating its existing user policy focusing on the safety of youngsters on its platform — adults are hereby limited to interact with teenagers without their consent.

Instagram is introducing a new privacy feature they dubbed “safety prompts” that restricts adults from sending direct messages to teens — a teenage IG user must follow an adult to interact via direct messages.

Instagram’s new safety policy exclusively prompts young users who initiate a conversation with adults or adults who sends the first DM — especially adults IG labels as users who contradict its policy.

According to IG, its safety prompts function as an optional notice — a short message where teens will either choose to block or report an adult who sends unsolicited messages without their consent or lacks any ties with them.

Henceforth, teenagers are assured of ‘increased security socializing via IG, an online community where they don’t need to feel coerced or pressured to reply to DMs. This policy enables users to socialize on the internet with caution — sharing sensitive information such as photos, addresses, videos, with either John or Jane Doe is restricted.

Instagram intends to use its moderate system to counter such unsolicited behaviours still they did not disclose how their system functions. Though they noted that the safety prompts policy is triggered by sending numerous unsolicited messages or friends request to users below the age of 18.

The safety prompts will be available as a mock-up version in few countries — it will be available globally when it is fully developed.

While Facebook’s Instagram modifies its privacy policy, they are also developing another new technology — machine learning and artificial intelligence that detects a potential user’s real age when opening a new account. The lie detector seems to be vital since potential users easily lie about their age which voids IGs policy of not admitting users below the age of 13.

Controlling underaged users from accessing social media seems endless — IG is so keen on curtailing such default. Still, they did not disclose how they intend to channel their new lucrative Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence tech to curb such deficiency.

To make their new privacy policy function at its peak, Facebook’s Instagram intends to encourage teenage users that signed up newly to utilize its private profile feature which is not compulsory — users can still choose to socialize via a public account at will.

The safe internet Social community then prompts new teenage users via notifications about the benefits of enabling its private profile which can be activated in the settings of the app.
