Alibaba Sharpens Focus on AI Profits With Revamp

Alibaba is preparing a major corporate revamp aimed at sharpening its focus on artificial intelligence and turning AI development into a stronger source of profits, according to a Bloomberg report.

The Chinese technology giant is reorganising parts of its operations to bring several of its AI-related efforts under a more unified structure, showing a deeper push to monetize artificial intelligence across its businesses.

As part of the overhaul, Alibaba plans to create a dedicated AI business group that will combine several existing research and development teams, including units responsible for the company’s large language models and AI infrastructure.

Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu is expected to take a direct leadership role in the new unit, highlighting how central AI has become to the company’s long-term strategy. The group will focus on developing AI-native platforms and services for enterprise customers.

Alibaba has spent heavily on artificial intelligence in recent years, building large language models such as Qwen and integrating AI into services ranging from cloud computing to e-commerce.

However, the company is now under pressure from investors to convert those technological investments into sustainable revenue growth.

Alibaba Cloud which hosts many of the company’s AI products  has been one of the fastest-growing parts of the group, with demand rising for AI infrastructure, data processing, and enterprise automation tools.

By reorganising its AI operations, Alibaba hopes to move faster in launching commercial products and capturing new enterprise customers seeking AI capabilities.

The revamp also reflects growing competition within China’s AI sector.

Newer AI startups such as MiniMax, Moonshot AI, and Zhipu have been attracting funding and attention with their own large language models and AI platforms, challenging established technology giants like Alibaba and Tencent.

At the same time, global competition from companies such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic has intensified the race to build more powerful AI systems and developer ecosystems.

Alibaba appears determined to remain a major player in that race by reorganizing its resources around artificial intelligence.

The restructuring continues a broader transformation underway at Alibaba, which has been reshaping its business structure in recent years to adapt to slowing growth in traditional e-commerce and rising demand for cloud computing and AI services.

Founded in 1999 by Jack Ma, Alibaba has grown into one of China’s largest technology companies, with businesses spanning e-commerce, cloud computing, digital media, logistics, and artificial intelligence.

With the latest overhaul, the company is signalling that AI will increasingly sit at the centre of its future business model, both as a technology platform and as a driver of new revenue streams.
