A Deep Dive into Google’s Latest Non-Pixel Hardware Announcements

Amidst the buzz generated by the unveiling of the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones at the recent Google event in San Francisco, a host of other innovative products were also launched. Let’s take a more detailed look at these releases.

First in line is the innovative Google Pixelbook laptop. As the first convertible Chromebook with Google Assistant baked in, this high-performance machine is a direct challenge to Apple’s MacBook and Microsoft Surface Laptop. The laptop, which comes with an integrated Pixelbook Pen for enhanced navigation, is priced at a somewhat steep $999. However, this is reflective of its standing as a top-tier Chromebook capable of supporting or running Android apps.

The Google Pixelbook is encased in lightweight aluminium, making it an ideal travelling companion. Its versatile design allows it to serve as a laptop, tablet, or even as a standing tent for viewing media. With a 12.3-inch Quad HD display, USB ports on both sides, a speaker port, charging port, a powerful Intel Core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and a robust 128GB storage capacity, this laptop checks more than a few boxes for tech enthusiasts.

Next up is the Daydream View 2, Google’s second-generation virtual reality (VR) headset. Compatible with any phone supporting Google Daydream (like the Samsung Galaxy S8, S8 Plus, and Note 8), View 2 is an upgrade to the previous model, boasting wider lens for a more immersive VR experience.

Complementing the updated Daydream View 2 is yet another accessory from Google: Pixel Buds. These partially wireless earbuds, priced at $150, come with an inbuilt microphone and accelerometer, along with a charging case. With an impressive battery life offering up to five hours of audio on a single charge, these earbuds are set to give Apple’s popular Airpods a run for their money.

In the smart speaker realm, Google has introduced the Home Mini speaker – a compact counterpart to last year’s Home. Wrapped in fabric and carrying a price tag of $400, this rectangular speaker is designed to deliver superior audio quality even in its smaller form. With support for numerous music streaming services, Google Home Mini aims to be the ultimate DJ for your gatherings. Its release is expected in December.

In the final reveal of the day, Google presented Clips – a lightweight, clip-on camera reminiscent of the erstwhile Google Glass. Priced at $249, Clips can be paired with Google’s latest Pixel phones and can be conveniently attached to various surfaces for capturing memorable moments. Working in tandem with Google Photos, Clips make image capturing easier and more spontaneous than ever.

Google’s recent launch event in San Francisco demonstrates their unwavering commitment to technological innovation across a range of devices. While the focus may be on smartphones with the Pixel 2 and 2 XL, these other devices make it clear that Google is not limiting its sights just yet. As these new offerings hit shelves in the coming months, tech enthusiasts around the world will undoubtedly be watching with bated breath.
