Amazon has launched the Echo Show, a WiFi-enabled home device equipped with a striking seven-inch screen for call functionality. The Echo Show is the company’s second Alexa-powered smart home device, following the successful release of the Echo hub hardware. A key distinguishing feature setting the Echo Show apart from its predecessor is the inclusion of an easy-to-use, interactive screen.

The new device is priced at $229.99, and it is slated to hit the market on June 28th. “Echo Show boasts eight microphones and beam-forming technology, enabling it to hear your voice commands even from across the room — and yes, that’s even while there’s music playing,” the company explained. The gadget is more than a voice-command smart device; it’s also equipped with Dolby-powered speakers, offering immersive audio that can fill any room.

Although the Echo Show comes with an Alexa Calling feature, the company stresses it isn’t intended to replace mobile phones. Instead, it presents a unique potential solution to the dwindling use of fixed landline phones by modernizing the concept for contemporary households.

As for the device’s specifications, the Echo Show measures 7.4 x 7.4 x 3.5 inches. It weighs approximately 41.0 oz., and its dimensions and weight could slightly vary due to the manufacturing process. A striking 7-inch touchscreen is situated at the core of its design. Additionally, a 5MP camera has been incorporated for video calling functionality.

The device supports dual-band WiFi connections as 802.11 a/b/g/n (2.4 and 5 GHz) and it doesn’t support ad-hoc or peer-to-peer WiFi networks. As for Bluetooth, the Echo Show offers Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) which supports audio streaming from your mobile device to the Echo Show or from the Echo Show to your Bluetooth speakers. Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) makes voice control of connected mobile devices possible.

The Echo Show features dual 2-inch stereo speakers for clear and room-filling sound. It uses the Alexa App, which is compatible with Fire OS, Android, and iOS devices. Lastly, the device features an Intel Atom x5-Z8350 processor for advanced technology and processing capabilities.

A 1-year limited warranty and service are included for the device, and there are optional 1-year, 2-year, and 3-year extended warranties available for purchase separately.

In terms of what’s included with the purchase, each box contains the Echo Show device itself, a power adapter and cable (6 ft.), a handy “Things to Try” card, along with a quick start guide.

According to industry estimates, Amazon is projected to dominate approximately 70 percent of the voice-controlled speaker market this year.
