Amazon Bolsters Its Presence in South Africa with New Offices and Job Opportunities

Tech titan, Amazon, is fortifying its South African footprint, echoing Facebook’s similar move to open an office in the country. In an ambitious bid to further expand its presence, Amazon plans to recruit more than 250 skilled employees in the next year. These hires will be based across multiple offices and fill pivotal technical roles.

The move predominantly targets Amazon Web Services (AWS) and will witness a multitude of engineers, network experts, account managers, and other technologists fortifying Amazon’s expanding workforce.

The bustling e-commerce market in Nigeria, projected to be worth an estimated $13 billion by 2018, is experiencing a surge in competition. New contestants are entering the race monthly. However, South Africa, home to some of the best infrastructure on the African continent, is becoming an increasingly attractive technology hub for multinational corporations.

Recent controversial reports on Amazon’s work culture have drawn considerable attention. The New York Times published an article discussing alleged harsh working conditions, prompting a rebuttal from CEO Jeff Bezos.

The report described a cutthroat environment where workers are encouraged to rigorously scrutinize each other’s ideas, work long hours, and maintain what the company hails as ‘unreasonably high’ standards. An internal phone directory even provides instructions on how employees can send covert feedback about their peers. Several former employees have both supported and contested these claims.

As Amazon continues to extend its global presence and influence, the tech giant remains a significant topic of discussion in the world of technology and beyond.

This article was updated in 2025 to reflect modern realities.
