Apple Adds Real-Time Translation to Messages, FaceTime, and Calls

In a quietly pivotal moment during today’s WWDC 2025, Apple introduced a breakthrough feature in its communication apps: real-time live translation. This marks a significant leap in on-device intelligence—and a bold step toward making language barriers a thing of the past .

Imagine texting in another language and seeing instant translation of incoming messages as you type, or seamlessly chatting in FaceTime with someone who doesn’t speak your native tongue, with subtitles appearing live. That’s now Apple’s reality. The translation works within Messages, FaceTime, and even the Phone app, using on-device machine learning, ensuring all speech and text data stays private.

Apple’s pitch to users is simple: global conversation without compromise. There’s no need to pause and copy-paste text into translators or rely on cloud services that threaten personal data security. Everything happens right on your device, respecting Apple’s long-standing privacy promises. For international families, global business calls, or multilingual classrooms, this could be the most practical AI feature unveiled today.

The strategic timing is noteworthy too. Amidst Apple’s broader revamp with “Liquid Glass” design, this translation tool underlines a deeper narrative: Apple is moving from flashy visual overhaul to smarter, more functional software. While Genmoji and interface redesigns capture attention, features like this could reshape everyday usage.

That said, Apple is playing it cautious—the Siri overhaul is still offstage, and this translation feature doesn’t yet offer adaptive learning or accent customization. It’s polished and functional, but not revolutionary. Still, it’s momentous: the company has threaded the needle between intelligent features and trusted user privacy.

You expect translation features across all communication channels this fall, with developer betas kicking off today and public availability planned later in 2025. This is Apple laying the groundwork for a truly global, seamlessly connected ecosystem—one conversation at a time.
