Earlier today Apple unveiled the AirPods Max 2 headphones, which marks a major leap forward for the company’s premium over-ear headphones. This is powered by the advanced H2 chip and the second-generation model that delivers significantly enhanced Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), a feature that makes it a more refined acoustic experience, and a host of other intelligent features. For the first time on AirPods Max, capabilities such as Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, and Live Translation arrive to create a smarter, more immersive listening experience designed to enhance everyday listening.
As mentioned in the first paragraph, features like Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, and Live Translation are available for the first time on AirPods Max, and these contribute to a more responsive and engaging listening experience. In order to make the headphones helpful for podcasters, musicians, and other content creators, Apple has also added features like studio-quality recording settings and a camera remote capability.
The AirPods Max 2 will be available early next month, with pre-orders starting on March 25. Five finishes, midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue, will be available when the headphones are released.
The new chip greatly improves noise cancellation performance, according to Eric Treski, Apple’s director of audio product marketing. He pointed out that while personalized spatial audio further improves immersion, the enhancements enable listeners to hear better, more detailed audio.
It is powered by the Apple H2 chip. The AirPods Max 2 feature noise cancellation that is up to 1.5 times more effective than the previous generation, helping reduce distractions such as airplane engines and noisy commutes. An improved Transparency mode also allows outside sounds to come through more naturally when users need to stay aware of their surroundings.
A redesigned high dynamic range amplifier works with the H2 chip to deliver clearer, more detailed sound while preserving the signature audio profile of AirPods Max. Spatial audio is also enhanced with better instrument separation, deeper bass, and more natural mid- and high frequencies. When connected via the included USB-C cable, the headphones support 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio with ultra-low latency, making them suitable for music production and responsive mobile gaming.
The H2 chip also enables several intelligent features, including adaptive audio, conversation awareness, live translation powered by Apple Intelligence, and voice isolation for clearer calls. Other additions include a camera remote that lets users capture photos or videos using the Digital Crown, studio-quality recording for podcasts and interviews, loud sound reduction for hearing protection, personalized volume adjustments, and hands-free Siri interactions through simple head gestures.
Apple says the headphones are designed with sustainability in mind. The AirPods Max 2 use recycled rare earth elements in their magnets, recycled polyester in the ear cushions, and recycled gold plating and tin solder in key components. The packaging is fully fiber-based, supporting the company’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.
It comes in different sleek colors, which are midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue, and designs, though the actual frame is still the same as the previous model. It still uses USB-C for data and charging.
Its cost maintains the $549 premium launch price, and users can start pre-ordering on the Apple Store from Wednesday, March 25, 2026. The launch date is still not known. However, it is expected to be early in April 2026 when general availability and shipment start.
These evaluations highlight the AirPods Max 2’s improved ANC, additional intelligence functions, including Live Translation, and improvements in audio quality.
