Apple Grants All Developers Access to Submit Watch Apps to the App Store

In a game-changing move, Apple has thrown open the doors to all developers, permitting them to submit Watch apps for approval to be featured on the App Store. As a result of this major shift, any of the staggering total of 1.2 million apps that currently populate the App Store can now submit updates including Watch applications. This development comes hot on the heels of Apple’s initial rollout which was solely accessible to select partners.

Understanding the Watch apps process requires understanding the integration of these apps into Apple’s ecosystem. Apple Watch applications are delivered as extensions embedded within standard iOS apps. Essentially, this means that customers can conveniently update iOS apps on their iPhones in preparation for using these extensions on their Apple Watch, with the product’s release slated for the 24th of this month. Apple has been assisting developers by directing them towards submission reference guidelines, lending them valuable insight about the process.

The possibilities that come with Apple Watch integration are diverse and exciting. They range from rich notifications to ‘glances’, which are akin to Today View widgets available on iPhones, and extend to WatchKit apps. The latter provide a broad spectrum of functionality, adding a new layer of versatility to the Apple user experience. One limitation to note is that for these third-party apps to run, the iPhone must be linked with the Apple Watch. However, a ray of hope for this constraint comes in the form of a native SDK—expected to be unveiled later this year—which will likely do away with this limitation.

Companies like the New York Times, Uber, and Flipboard have already begun rolling out Apple Watch updates. With the current opening up of the submission process, it is reasonable to anticipate a flood of new app updates rolling out soon, once they earn the Apple seal of approval. This not only testifies to the widespread developer interest in the Apple Watch but also hints at the significant impact that this wearable device is expected to have on our day-to-day lives.
