Here is the official press release from tech behemoth Apple:

CUPERTINO, Calif. – Apple® today made a record-breaking announcement about its first-day pre-orders for the highly-anticipated iPhone® 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The latest developments in the iPhone franchise have attracted over a mind-boggling four million pre-orders within the first 24 hours of its release.

Given the overwhelming demand, the initial pre-order supply of the new iPhones has been surpassed. However, a significant portion will start rolling out to eager customers from Friday and onwards throughout September, with additional pre-orders lined up for delivery in October.

For those unable to secure a pre-order, it’s not all doom and gloom. Walk-in customers can still buy the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus from Apple retail stores from 8:00 a.m. local time on Friday, September 19. Additionally, both models will be available from a list of approved carriers and select Apple Authorized Resellers.

Apple CEO, Tim Cook, expressed his excitement over the milestone, stating: “iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are better in every way, and we are thrilled customers love them as much as we do. Pre-orders for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus set a new record for Apple, and we can’t wait to get our best iPhones yet into the hands of customers starting this Friday.”

The new iPhones are major advancements in iPhone history, featuring two new models with stunning 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch Retina® HD displays, and packed with innovative technologies. Customers can buy the iPhones in gold, silver, or space gray for retail prices starting at $199 (US) for the 16GB model, with higher-priced options available for larger storage capacities.

The new iPhones also include iOS 8, the biggest release since the advent of the App Store℠. This incorporates multiple user-friendly features including predictive typing for Apple’s QuickType™ keyboard, a more intuitive user experience, and easier access to health and fitness data.
