Apple scheduled a media event on September 9, hinting at the potential launch of the iPhone 6 based on recent reports.
The upcoming event has been linked to that specific September date by Recode, a source widely acknowledged for its accurate information regarding Apple launches and updates. However, no further details were provided. Other observers have postulated that Apple might postpone the reveal of their newest smartphones until October, straying from their usual launch timeline.
Since the original introduction of the iPhone by former CEO Steve Jobs in 2007, Apple has consistently released a new iPhone every year. Over the last decade, September has become synonymous with iPhone launches.
Despite refusing to comment on the rumors, many expect the tech giant to roll out two new iPhone 6 variants, one with a 4.7-inch display and another with a 5.5-inch screen. Some still speculate that one of the proposed models might be released at a later date. According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple has requested their manufacturing partners to deliver between 70 and 80 million units of its larger screen iPhones before the end of December. That’s a significant increase in their initial order of 50 million to 60 million units of the iPhone 5S and 5C.
As the iPhone has driven Apple’s revenues for several years, the company typically gains about half of its income from selling this flagship smartphone. Yet, Apple now faces mounting competition in the high-end market from rivals such as Samsung. In the low-end market of emerging economies such as China, Apple hasn’t made significant inroads, making the success of their upcoming launch crucial.
Despite these challenges, Apple continues to retain its fan base. The company reported nearly 800 million iTunes accounts in April, a figure that CEO Tim Cook dubbed as ‘staggering.’ A year prior, Apple had nearly 575 million accounts. Apple recently reported selling 35.2 million iPhones during the third fiscal quarter ending in June, showing growth compared to 31.2 million units sold during the same period the previous year. These findings affirm that the iPhone remains an influential player in the rapidly evolving smartphone industry.
