AWS Leads in Public Cloud Usage, But Competition Gains Ground

More businesses than ever before are harnessing the power of the cloud for their busiest workloads, creating a dramatic increase in public cloud usage. Companies that provide cloud-based services are witnessing a steady surge in their user base. Prominent among these businesses are Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google’s cloud services.

According to a recent survey conducted by RightScale, AWS currently retains the lion’s share of the market, with 57% of respondents reporting AWS usage, an increase from 54% the previous year. Microsoft Azure, while still significantly less in comparison, has demonstrated impressive growth, doubling its usage rate from 6% to 12% in just one year.

Despite AWS’s dominance, the landscape of the cloud platform market is far from static. Rackspace and Google App Engine are emerging as robust alternatives, both experiencing considerable usage in their own right. AWS has enjoyed a four-year head start, debuting in 2006, compared to Microsoft Azure, which launched in 2010. While AWS maintains a substantial lead, it would be unwise to discount the rapidly growing popularity of its Microsoft counterpart.

As the technology world continues to evolve, so too does the landscape for public cloud services. The race between AWS, Microsoft Azure, and emerging competitors will undoubtedly be compelling to follow. As businesses turn toward cloud solutions for their increasing workloads and data management needs, the demand for powerful, reliable cloud services will continue to amplify. May the best cloud win.
