Microsoft co-founder and renowned software tycoon, Bill Gates, has forecasted that an existing technology will soon eclipse smartphones. He’s referring to electronic tattoos, a novel technology he anticipates will supersede our current mobile devices.

Before we delve into this, let’s clarify: what exactly is an electronic tattoo?

Unlike a traditional medical tattoo, an electronic or digital tattoo is temporary, not permanent. These tattoos incorporate electronics such as sensors or Near Field Communication (NFC) chips. They also carry a person’s digital footprint, meaning they can track and analyse a person’s online activities, behaviours, and communications.

Electronic tattoos can also facilitate tap-to-pay transactions. Users can authenticate their identities and pay for goods and services at NFC-enabled points of sale (POS) without needing a physical device or wallet.

These tattoos typically feature a graphic image that conceals a small, flexible NFC chip. This chip, small enough to fit on a fingertip, is embedded in the skin of the wearer. The chip contains a small amount of memory that can be accessed using a smartphone app. With a lifespan of up to a week and a cost slightly higher than a standard temporary tattoo, including the chip, electronic tattoos are a cost-effective and innovative solution.

Bill Gates, seeing the functionalities of these electronic tattoos is envisaging a future where the use of sensors, trackers, and other wearable devices akin to digital tattoos can be used to communicate, send messages, and make phone calls.

The former Microsoft Chief Executive sees the early implementation of the Chaotic Moon futuristic device as a worthy replacement for the present-day smartphone.

Imagine not having to hold a phone in your pocket or hand to send a message or make a call to that person but having the device ingrained in your skin, having the opportunity to abide by your beck and call. Well this is what it all means
