OpenAI is well on its way to reporting one billion active ChatGPT users each week. In just 18 months, the company’s weekly active user base has grown by 350% to 900 million. This noticeable growth comes after the introduction of ads to certain users on ChatGPT. The milestone of one billion weekly users is already quickly approaching on the network.
Here is a note from the company, which also notes that over 5 per cent of weekly active users are paying consumer members.
With over 900 million weekly active users and more than 50 million consumer customers, ChatGPT is the place where consumers first encounter AI. January and February are expected to be the biggest months for new subscribers in our history, as subscriber momentum picked up speed at the beginning of the year. ChatGPT is used for learning, writing, planning, and building. People rapidly see improvements in the product as usage increases, such as quicker reactions, more dependability, improved safety, and more reliable functioning.
OpenAI first surpassed 200 million weekly active users just a year and a half ago. And prior to this time, the number of weekly users on ChatGPT increased from 300 million in December of last year to over 500 million in March 2025 in a matter of months.
Demandsage also shared the statistics and trend of the traffic on ChatGPT by month from January 2023 to January 2026.
Other key details of this growth surge as seen are that in early 2026, ChatGPT’s app market share was at 45.3%, while rivals like Google Gemini increased to a 25.2% share in terms of the market share value, and in terms of the global footprint, India (16.5%) and the United States (17.1%) continue to be the primary traffic sources.
The corporation was valued at about $840 billion when this user milestone and a fresh $110 billion fundraising round were announced.
Through iOS 18 and iOS 26, ChatGPT has been directly integrated with Siri since August 2024.
Naturally, AI chatbots have become so popular that even Apple is anticipated to reverse course and transform Siri into an AI chatbot in iOS 27.
Although Apple began implementing AI at the system level through an OpenAI agreement, the company has now partnered with Google to employ Gemini as the brains behind Apple Intelligence and a more customised version of Siri that will launch as soon as iOS 26.5.
With the aid of Anthropic and OpenAI tools, Apple has also made Xcode accessible to agentic coding.
