ChatGPT’s mobile app has grown to be a substantial source of income, with $2 billion in global customer expenditure. App analytics company Appfigures has released a new report showing that ChatGPT’s iOS and Android app has generated $2 billion in global customer expenditure since its May 2023 launch. The data shows that this amount is around 30 times the total lifetime spending of ChatGPT’s competitors on mobile, such as Claude, Copilot, and Grok.
Data also shows that ChatGPT’s mobile app has made $1.35 billion so far this year, 2025, up 673% over the $174 million it made in 2024 during the same time (January–July). The app is now making over $193 million a month on average, up from $25 million the previous year. With India having the most installs of the app, with 690 million downloads worldwide. The information demonstrates ChatGPT’s market leadership in mobile AI chatbots.
That’s a whopping 53 times more than ChatGPT’s next closest rival, Grok, which has made about $25.6 million so far this year. Grok spends $3.6 million a month on average, which is 1.9% of ChatGPT’s monthly total.
Even while the figures don’t give a whole picture of the AI businesses’ total revenue, this data indicates that other consumer chatbots still have a ways to go before they can overtake ChatGPT’s supremacy on mobile devices. Businesses, teams, and consumers can also sign up for AI programs online, and the companies make money in other ways as well, such as through their APIs.
Instead, this new data provides insight into the popularity of the apps among users, who find and purchase these AI helpers through mobile app shops.
It’s also important to remember that Grok, a product of xAI, didn’t have standalone iOS or Android apps when it first released in November 2023 (after ChatGPT). Rather, the X platform was used by users to communicate with the AI chatbot. Grok has been on Google Play since March 4 and only became accessible on mobile devices through its own iOS app in early January 2025.
Claude’s $2.55, Grok’s $0.75, and Copilot’s $0.28 lifetime global spending per download, according to Appfigures, is higher than ChatGPT’s $2.91.
Statista, another source shows the time it took to reach the 1 million users with the above chat as 5-days compared to the likes of Netflix that took 3.5years to reach a million users and others as seen.
The market now accounts for 38% of ChatGPT’s total revenue, with the cost per download in the U.S. being even higher at $10. At 5.3% of ChatGPT’s lifetime total spending, Germany is the second-largest market.
In terms of downloads, ChatGPT leads as well. Compared to Grok, which has 39.5 million installations worldwide, the app has an estimated 690 million. (That clarifies Elon Musk’s previous concerns on the App Store’s purported preference for ChatGPT in its Top Charts.)
The average number of ChatGPT downloads worldwide has increased to almost 45 million per month, a 180% increase from roughly 16 million in January through July of 2024.
ChatGPT’s app has been downloaded 318 million times so far in 2025, which is 2.8 times higher than the 113 million it received during the same time last year. However, India leads the market in terms of installs, making up 13.7% of lifetime downloads, while the U.S. comes in second with 10.3% of all downloads.
