ChatGPT Users Get Memory Control and Access to Projects

OpenAI has rolled out two updates that change how people interact with ChatGPT. The company introduced memory controls that let users decide what the AI remembers, while also opening up its Projects feature to all users, including those on the free plan.

The memory control feature addresses growing concerns about AI systems storing personal information. Users can now tell ChatGPT to remember something, ask it what it remembers, and tell it to forget conversations.

The memory system works in two distinct ways. ChatGPT maintains saved memories that include details like names, preferences, and goals, while also accessing chat history from previous conversations. The AI automatically saves important information from conversations, but users maintain control over what gets remembered and what gets forgotten.

For privacy-conscious users, OpenAI included several protective measures. Users can delete individual memories, clear specific or all saved memories, or disable memory entirely through settings.

The practical benefits of this is that. Instead of repeatedly explaining preferences, work projects, or personal details, ChatGPT remembers these details across sessions. A user working on multiple writing projects no longer needs to re-explain their style preferences or project requirements in each new conversation.

However, the feature brings about mixed reactions as  users express discomfort with the AI keeping detailed personal information. The concern centers on having an AI system that never forgets personal details, preferences, and conversation history.

OpenAI addressed these concerns by ensuring users retain complete control. Users can opt out of referencing past chats or memory altogether at any time in settings, and can ask the AI what it remembers or delete specific items. Those who previously disabled memory won’t have old conversations automatically referenced unless they change their settings.

Alongside memory improvements, OpenAI expanded access to its Projects feature. Free users can now upload five files per project, while Plus subscribers can upload 25 and Pro subscribers can upload 40. The feature allows users to organize work, revisit previous conversations, and continue projects in dedicated spaces.

Projects essentially function as organized workspaces within ChatGPT. Users can create separate projects for different topics, upload relevant files, and maintain focused conversations around specific themes. This organization prevents work discussions from mixing with personal conversations or different project requirements.

The expansion to free users represents OpenAI’s strategy of gradually extending premium features to its broader user base. All users, regardless of subscription status, can customize project colors and icons, making the experience more personalized and visually organized.

These updates reflect OpenAI’s response to user feedback about ChatGPT’s limitations. Previous versions required users to repeatedly provide context and couldn’t maintain project continuity across sessions. The memory and projects features address these pain points while maintaining user control over privacy and data management.

The memory feature particularly benefits users who rely on ChatGPT for ongoing work relationships. Professionals using the AI for writing assistance, coding projects, or creative work no longer need to re-establish context in each session. The AI remembers writing styles, project requirements, and personal preferences, making interactions more efficient.

For businesses and educational users, Projects provide better organization and collaboration possibilities. Teams can create shared project spaces, maintain relevant documentation, and ensure consistent AI assistance across different work streams.

The rollout demonstrates OpenAI’s commitment to balancing functionality with user control. Rather than implementing universal memory without consent, the company provided granular controls that let users decide exactly how much information they want ChatGPT to retain.

These features position ChatGPT as more than just a question-and-answer tool. The AI becomes a persistent assistant that adapts to individual users over time while respecting their privacy preferences. The combination of memory and organized project spaces creates a more integrated experience for regular users.

The updates also highlight OpenAI’s competitive response to other AI assistants offering similar personalization features. By providing both enhanced memory and better organization tools, ChatGPT maintains its position as a leading AI assistant while addressing user demands for more sophisticated interaction models.

Whether users embrace these features depends largely on their comfort level with AI systems that remember personal information. OpenAI’s emphasis on user control and transparency suggests recognition that not everyone wants a memory-enabled AI assistant, while those who do want complete control over the experience.
