Chip Tester Advantest Struck By Ransomware

The Japanese manufacturer of semiconductor sector and testing equipment, Advantest Corporation, acknowledged that it was the target of a ransomware attack that was discovered on February 15, 2026. The company supplies important automated test equipment to TSMC, Samsung, and Intel, among other key chipmakers. Major chipmakers including TSMC, Samsung, and Intel are among its clients.

Advantest said it discovered an attack in its IT network on February 15 and promptly triggered incident response procedures in a statement posted on its website on Thursday.

Regarding the cybersecurity problem, the corporation has not disclosed much information. However, in an effort to minimise the problem and look into the breach, Advantest has isolated the compromised systems and hired outside cybersecurity specialists.

Initial results point to parts of the network being accessed without authorisation. Although there is currently no proof of data theft, the business is actively looking into the possibility that employee or customer information was compromised.

As of yet, no known ransomware gang has taken credit for the intrusion.

Advantest stated, “Preliminary findings seem to suggest that an unauthorised third party may have obtained access to parts of the company’s network and installed ransomware.”

It’s unclear if the attackers stole any private data from the business.

Advantest stated, “We will notify impacted persons directly and provide guidance on protective measures if our investigation reveals that customer or employee data was affected.”

The attack on Advantest doesn’t seem to have been claimed by any recognised ransomware gang. The threat actor might still be attempting to demand a ransom from the victim before publishing the information on a leak website, though, considering that the intrusion was discovered less than a week ago.

Threat actors frequently attack the semiconductor industry. Large corporations like Nexperia, TSMC, Microchip Technology, and Foxsemicon have acknowledged being impacted by ransomware in recent years.

Only a few months had passed since the Japanese government released new operational technology (OT) security guidelines for semiconductor manufacturers when Advantest was attacked.

This attack is a component of a larger ransomware trend that targets the supply chain for semiconductors. Similar cybersecurity breaches have also occurred in recent years at other significant industry participants, including TSMC, Nexperia, and Microchip Technology.

Advantest has agreed to post frequent updates on its Official News Page and to notify any individuals directly if their personal information is discovered to have been compromised.
