Spotify the music streaming giant is improving its service for free users as well, such as the option to listen to any song you desire, after a long-awaited release of lossless streaming for paying customers. Free users worldwide will now be able to search and play any music they choose, or play a song shared by a friend or an artist they follow on social media, the business stated earlier today on this latest development.
The new features are referred to by the corporation as “Pick & Play,” “Search & Play,” and “Share & Play,” in that order. With the former, users can search for a certain song and play it, or they can tap play in the Spotify app to select and play any song they want.
When free users see music on social media, the “Share & Play” function can entice them to open Spotify. For example, Instagram enables users to upload music on Instagram Notes and to share a Spotify track to Stories with sound.
On mobile devices, free users could previously shuffle tracks with a restricted number of skips.
Although Spotify claims that the new capabilities will be made available to free users worldwide, Premium members will still be exempt from some limitations.
The company informed a media agent that customers on the free mobile experience will be limited to a certain amount of skips each hour when they exceed its limit daily of “on-demand time.” Although Spotify did not specify the duration of the time limit, it did mention that Premium customers will not be subject to these limitations.
Daniel Ek, the CEO of Spotify, told investors that the company had been “moving too slowly” on its ad business in recent months. Although it has only increased to 11% as of June, the streamer expects ad income to account for 20% of its total revenue. Spotify might increase engagement among its free users by introducing new features, which would expose them to more advertisements.
While some services, like the recently released Messages and personalised playlist daylist, which are accessible to users worldwide, will continue to be available in both the free and premium versions, Spotify claims that other elements, including as its support for lossless, AI Playlists, and Mix, will remain Premium-only offerings.
Today, the majority of the company’s users are free users. In the most recent quarter, 433 million of Spotify’s 696 million monthly active users were free, ad-supported consumers. Furthermore, during the quarter, there were 276 million Premium (paying) customers.
On the other hand, lossless music with a quality of up to 24 bits/44 kHz is now available to Premium customers ($12 per month), who also get access to services like the AI DJ, audiobooks, and the new messaging tool.
