On Wednesday, Instacart declared that Chris Rogers, its chief business officer, had been named the company’s new CEO. The chief business officer was elevated to the position of top executive of Instacart. The appointment takes effect on August 15. Rogers will also become a member of the board of directors of Instacart.
The statement was made just a few weeks after Fidji Simo, the CEO of Instacart, announced her resignation to become the CEO of Applications at OpenAI. Simo will continue to serve as Instacart’s board chair.
Simo wrote in the statement, “I am so excited to watch how Chris grows the company’s impact from here. He brings the kind of vision, operational excellence, and customer obsession that will help Instacart play an even bigger role in people’s lives.”
As chief business officer, Rogers was in charge of Instacart’s partnerships, mergers and acquisitions, Instacart Business, Instacart Health, Ad Sales and R&D, and retailer relationships and growth.
According to the statement, Rogers joined Instacart in 2019 after nearly 11 years at Apple as managing director for Apple Canada. According to Instacart, he started his career at Procter & Gamble, where he oversaw partnerships with Canada’s biggest national grocery stores. He has almost 20 years of expertise in retail, media, technology, and consumer products. His current responsibilities at Instacart include managing partnerships, mergers and acquisitions, ad sales and R&D, retailer relationships and growth, Instacart Business, and Instacart Health.
“What has always inspired me most about our mission is that Instacart is at the heart of how people shop, eat, and take care of their families,” Rogers stated in a press release. “We’re changing grocery shopping in the future with our partners, but more significantly, we’re assisting people in meeting practical, everyday requirements. I’m pleased to take over and manage Instacart’s next chapter since we have a top-notch staff, strong relationships, cutting-edge technology, and an ambitious future vision.
During his tenure as CEO, Instacart will continue to concentrate on its “unwavering commitment to growing the pie for retailers and brands,” according to Rogers’ blog post. He also noted that Instacart will try to provide more flexible profit opportunities for shoppers on its platform.
Simo wrote in a letter to staff members that Rogers has been instrumental in the development of Instacart and that she will keep collaborating with him in the upcoming months to ensure a seamless transition.
“The company needs a leader who has extensive operational experience, can inspire teams around our vision, and has a deep understanding of all our partners, which is why we chose Chris,” Simo stated. Chris is familiar with this business. He influenced its form. And I have no doubt that Chris will continue our mission with zeal, concern, and determination. I am very thrilled for him to take over as CEO and guide Instacart through its next stage of expansion.
“I’m honoured to step in and lead Instacart’s next chapter,” Rogers stated in the statement. “We have a world-class team, deep partnerships, leading technology, and a bold vision for the future.”
Later this year, Simo will become the CEO of apps at OpenAI.
Earlier this month, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced Simo’s appointment, citing the organization’s changing status as a “global product company,” infrastructure company, and nonprofit as the reason for the change.
According to Altman, Simo’s primary responsibility will be to assist OpenAI in scaling its “traditional” operations as it enters a new stage of expansion.
“Fidji is uniquely qualified to lead this group,” he stated at the time, adding that Applications brings together a mix of current business and operational teams in charge of how our research reaches and benefits the world.
Simo’s hire demonstrates that OpenAI is “making a strong play for the consumer market,” as PYMNTS stated shortly after the announcement.
On May 8, Julia Huang, a founding partner at Vesey Ventures, told PYMNTS, “OpenAI obviously wants to own the consumer platform.” “They have a great chance of succeeding, and Fidji’s expertise in connecting customers and merchants from Instacart would be extremely beneficial.”
