A recent study by Juniper Research has reported that the number of teleconsultations to be globally performed will reach 765 million in the year 2025, a 80 percent growth from the present 422 million teleconsultations in 2021.

A process by which health care can be digitally accessed through the use of mobile devices and computers, where patients can easily access a doctor through a voice and video call is known as telemedicine.

The COVID-19 pandemic restricted moments of people and services and in cognizance of this, telemedicine came to the rescue as patients can sit in the comforts of their homes to get access to health care, ask questions, and get prescription among others.

Teleconsultations is a process that gives the opportunity and leverage to patients and healthcare providers to remotely communicate through the use of dedicated healthcare portals, apps or consumer video calling platforms.

In the Juniper Research report, it was mooted that platforms have develop solutions that cater to differing capacities of regional healthcare sectors for teleconsultations services to be an important element of healthcare provision.

The report identified cloud services and 5G connectivity as vital ingredients for the enablement of local healthcare providers with a view to benefiting from remote teleconsultation technologies.

The new report titled: ‘Telemedicine: Emerging Technologies, Regional Readiness & Market Forecasts 2021-2025’ had predicted that a patient will averagely use teleconsultation services for at least 3.6 times per year.

The report also predicted that over 50 percent of teleconsultations will happen in North America and Europe by the year 2025.

Research author Adam Wears while analysing the forecast said:

“Teleconsultation services require high bandwidth, which is often unavailable in developing regions; limiting the impacts of services in these areas. However, the report predicts that 5G technologies can be used as a last-mile solution to underpin service provision in areas where Internet connectivity is sparse or inadequate,”

It was also acknowledged in the report that telemedicine technologies has the capacity to deliver $21 billion worth of significant cost savings for healthcare providers, by 2025 globally based on their ability to streamline administrative and patient‑facing tasks.

According to the report, there would be “the integration of consumer healthcare wearables into teleconsultation services will enable healthcare providers to more efficiently obtain patients’ health data without the need for a physical visit.”

The report further urged teleconsultations platforms to build cloud-based services that has the capability of effectively taking in sensitive healthcare information.
