The cloud is renowned not only for reducing costs but also for freeing up IT resources, allowing them to focus on pioneering initiatives and advanced projects.
A historical survey regarding the balance between IT maintenance and innovation reported that numerous CIOs indicated that over half of their resources were stuck in upkeep of current software and hardware, or “keep-the-lights-on” tasks. None were content with the overpowering maintenance to innovation ratio.
This sentiment was confirmed by more authoritative research. A recent poll of 100 CIOs revealed that 48 percent lamented allotting over half their operations’ energy and resources towards upkeeping existing projects. This focus on maintenance severely constrains their ability to pursue innovative initiatives designed to meet business requirements.
Conversely, a select group of CIOs revealed the allocation of their resources was skewed more towards innovation, dedicating only 20-40% of their resources to maintenance. The key to their strategy was a strong reliance on cloud technology. The cloud is known for significantly reducing hardware maintenance needs and in some cases, even eliminating the need for maintaining an operating system and software based on the system configuration.
Interestingly, corporations with private clouds have been able to shift substantial resources away from maintenance by capitalizing on virtual environments, standardization, and the cloud’s ability to streamline server migration. This shift reduces maintenance burdens and, in some cases, eliminates planned downtime. The freed time and resources allow IT departments to experiment with cutting-edge technology before business demands arise.
More and more businesses are recognizing the benefits of the cloud. Latest reports suggest that 45% of 830 IT leaders confirm that their primary reason for cloud adoption is fueled more by meeting business needs than reducing costs. This is a remarkable shift from two years ago when 73 percent cited cost reduction as their main reason.
These insights suggest a need for a fresh perspective among CIOs and other C-suite executives when considering cloud adoption. The overarching benefits of the cloud exceed merely cost saving and flexibility of IT resources, allaying earlier fears about increased risk. Companies reticent to embrace the cloud might be hindering their ability to innovate and respond to changing business landscapes, thus potentially missing opportunities to enhance market share. They must assess whether the benefits of keeping data on-premises outweigh these risks.
