Google Aids Colour-Blind Chrome Users with New Extension ‘Colour Enhancer’

In a commendable stride towards fostering an inclusive digital experience, Google has launched the ‘Colour Enhancer’ – an innovative extension aimed at assisting colour-blind users on Chrome. Given the prevalence of colour blindness, estimated to affect approximately 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women globally, this development serves as a welcome initiative from the internet giant for promoting a barrier-free online landscape.

The ‘Colour Enhancer’ has been designed to function as a customizable colour filter that operates across all web pages to enhance colour perception. While it isn’t touted as an absolute solution, it marks a noteworthy progression in expanding web accessibility, allowing individuals with partial colour blindness to experience the digital sphere similar to the majority.

The installation process for this extension is straightforward. Simply visit the Chrome Web Store and add the ‘Colour Enhancer’ extension. Once installed, you’ll need to click on the Colour Enhancer icon.

Upon activation, you’ll be presented with three rows of coloured stars. Your task is to identify the row with the faintest stars as per your vision. Once that’s chosen, a slider will materialize underneath the stars. Adjust this slider until all the stars in your selected row are visible to your eye. After this task is accomplished, hit ‘OK’ to minimize the drop down to its original dimensions.

For the ‘Colour Enhancer’ to take effect, you need to click ‘Enable’, post which users should observe an alteration in their colour perception whilst browsing.

Though experts assert that the ‘Colour Enhancer’ isn’t the definitive solution for users with colour blindness, it indeed indicates a sensitive shift towards accommodating the needs of a wider audience and is truly a step in the right direction.
