In a bold move to extend its reach, Microsoft announced in May its plans to broaden its voice assistant service, Cortana, to additional platforms. Specifically, Android and iOS were set as the key targets. As of yesterday, Microsoft has fulfilled part of its promise— the Cortana app has been launched and is now open to all Android phone users, albeit in its beta version. This marks a significant step in Microsoft’s endeavor to plant its foot firmly within the Android market.

“The Cortana app on Android might exhibit a few differences from its native environment on Windows. There are certain features—like toggling settings, opening apps, or invoking Cortana hands-free with ‘Hey Cortana’—that remain exclusive to Windows at present. However, being in its beta stage, we plan to continually enhance the user experience based on received feedback,” stated a Microsoft spokesperson.

For the ones keen to give it a try, here is the link to the Cortana app. An important detail to note is that, currently, the app is exclusively available to users in the United States, but plans for expanding its reach to other regions are already in the pipeline.

This adoption of Android devices by Cortana is aimed to push the boundaries of Microsoft’s digital presence, and the company eagerly looks forward to the refined product that shall emerge from this public beta testing phase.
