Running a small business successfully is a complex undertaking in itself. With the constant need to oversee everything from high-speed internet connectivity and synchronized mobile networks, to safeguarding fiscal information and social media accounts, it can be quite demanding. Further intensifying the situation, rampant cyber-attacks are increasingly targeting successful small businesses.

According to the data published by the US government, the incidence of digital information theft has overtaken physical property theft, becoming the most frequently reported type of business fraud. As a business owner, such a trend should indeed spawn worries. However, there are a myriad of proactive measures one can employ to prevent falling victim to such attacks. Here’s how you can fortify your business against the escalating threat of cyber-crimes.

Maintain Clean Machines

It is crucial that you ensure all your IT hardware, including computers, are installed with the latest security software, web browsers, and operating systems. This is a benevolent defense strategy against diverse forms of cyber threats such as viruses, malware, and other myriad nefarious software prowling on the internet.

Given that online threats are continually evolving, promptly installing key software updates is an effective protective measure. Regularly conduct a comprehensive scan for your entire system to ensure no virus has slipped under the radar. Prioritizing regular and prompt updates ensures that your defense mechanisms are always ready to counter any cyber threat.

Secure Your Wi-Fi Connection

For businesses that utilize Wi-Fi networks in their workplace, ensuring its encryption and security should be a top priority. Once secured, it is prudent to hide it from public view by configuring your wireless access point or router not to broadcast the network name or SSID (Service Set Identifier). Alongside this, secure router access with a strong password to further fortify your network from unauthorized access.

Implement Remote Access Software

It is important for SMBs to adopt remote access software for enhanced security. Remote access software offers resilience as it provides unrestrained access to your business information and accounts from anywhere in the world, regardless of unforeseen circumstances.

Set up Your Firewall

A firewall serves as a digital barrier that precludes external entities from accessing data on your private network. Therefore, having your operating system’s firewall enabled, along with a robust firewall program, fortifies your system’s defense. If your staff work remotely, ensure their systems are equally protected by a firewall to maintain a secure network.

Backup all Relevant Information

Prepare for potential cyber-attacks or system faults by regularly backing up crucial data such as relevant business figures and processing documentation. This could occur automatically after every business day or at least weekly, with copies stored either on the cloud or off-site.

Protect Your Mobile Devices

With mobile-targeted cyber-attacks on the rise, it’s important to guarantee the security of mobile devices. Protect your sensitive information by enabling password protection and encrypting your mobile devices, and those of your employees. Furthermore, encourage employees to install reliable security software to discourage data theft while connected to public networks.

Strengthen Passwords

Implement robust passwords across all devices and accounts, used both by you and your employees. A solid password typically includes at least one uppercase letter, a number, and a symbol, and its length should range between 7 to 14 characters. Consider integrating multi-factor authentication, which necessitates additional information to log in.

Fundamentally, while there are myriad cybersecurity protocols to embrace, these highlighted measures form the cornerstone of a robust cybersecurity policy. By proactively safeguarding your data and developing a cyber-resilient environment, you’ll ensure safe, uninterrupted online operations.
