Deepfake Pornography In The Age Of Free AI

Deepfakes used to be memes and funny stuff but now it is becoming a real concern, as advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning have made it easier to create convincing fake videos and images. These fakes can be used for harmless entertainment or more malicious purposes, such as spreading disinformation, propaganda, or revenge porn.

Deepfake pornography, which is one the challenges of the AI age manipulate or superimpose an individual’s face onto explicit images or videos, is a growing concern due to the harm it can cause to the individuals involved. Often, the faces used in deepfake porn are those of celebrities or public figures, but they can also be of everyday people especially revenge porn victims. Many of the pornographic sites feature images like this and have been accused of doing little to take down these videos.

The use of deepfake porn without consent is a violation of an individual’s privacy and can be extremely damaging to their reputation and mental health. According to a report by the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative, women are the primary victims of this type of abuse, with an estimated 95% of victims identify as female. This is likely due to the prevalence of sexism and misogyny online or can be a simple case of a jealous ex who wants to destroy the reputation of a former lover. It is important to note that this problem has been around for a while now but it’s gaining attention now because there are so many free AI tools that just about anyone can use to manipulate videos online.

The impact of deepfake porn on victims can be severe, leading to depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts. Victims may also face social stigma and discrimination, as well as negative effects on their personal and professional relationships. In some cases, deepfake porn can also be used for blackmail or extortion.

What is being done

To combat this, there are a number of organisations and individuals working to raise awareness and develop tools to detect and remove deepfake pornography from the internet. However, there is still much work to be done to protect individuals from the harm caused by this technology.

It is important for individuals to be aware of the potential risks of deepfake porn and to take steps to protect their privacy online, such as being cautious about the images and videos they share and regularly monitoring their online presence.  Victims especially in countries that have strong laws against revenge porn can report to authorities who can investigate and take decisive actions.

As a result, researchers have been developed tools to detect and remove deepfakes from the internet. For example, a team at the University of Albany has developed a deepfake detection tool that uses machine learning algorithms to identify fake videos based on subtle differences in facial movement and lighting.

Other tools and platforms that have been developed to combat deepfake porn include:

  • The Deeptrace Labs tool, which uses computer vision and machine learning to identify deepfake videos and images.
  • The Content Authenticity Initiative, which aims to develop a standard for verifying the authenticity of digital media and preventing the spread of manipulated content.
  • Pornhub’s Takedown Request Tool, which allows individuals to report and remove non-consensual deepfake porn from the site.

While these tools are important steps towards addressing the problem of deepfake porn, it’s also important for individuals to take measures to protect themselves and their online reputation. This includes being cautious about the content they share online, monitoring their online presence regularly, and being aware of potential threats to their privacy and security.
