As the echoes of “Happy New Year” still resonate around the globe, Apple finds itself in an immensely joyful position. In a recent statement, Apple announced that its App Store developers raked in a whopping $20 billion in 2016, marking a 40 percent rise from 2015. Furthermore, Apple kick-started 2017 with a flourish by recording the highest single-day App Store sales on January 1, a staggering $240 million, thanks chiefly to the success of Pokémon Go and Super Mario Go, both spectacularly introduced to the App Store last year.

Super Mario Go was not merely a game in demand during the festive period of Christmas and New Year’s Day, but it also emerged as the most downloaded app during this time. It’s important to bear in mind that Apple claims a 30 percent cut from such transactions, a crucial revenue-generating strategy that fortifies Apple’s mission to invigorate its services, especially during a period with dwindling iPhone sales. With this fee structure, developers’ actual earnings from the App Store would have been around $28 billion.

The App Store is one of Apple’s services that registered substantial revenue growth, skyrocketing to $6.33 billion in the last quarter of 2016 against $6.11 billion in the last quarter of 2015. It is worth noting that during the second quarter of last year, the App Store revenues were at $5.99 billion, marking a 20 percent uptick by the year-end.

Apple’s diverse portfolio of services includes Apple Music, iCloud, and iTunes, among others. With $2.7 billion banked from subscription services and App Store search ads yielding a hefty 50 percent conversion rate, Apple continues to underscore its stronghold over the market. Below, we have included Apple’s official press release for a direct glimpse.

Record-Breaking Holiday Season for the App Store

Apple today announced that the App Store entered 2017 with its busiest single day ever on New Year’s Day. This landmark capped a record-breaking holiday season and a year of unprecedented developer earnings and breakout app hits. In 2016 alone, developers earned over $20 billion, a surge of over 40 percent from 2015. Since the App Store’s inception in 2008, developers have amassed over $60 billion, paving the way for intuitive app experiences for App Store customers across the spectrum of iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and Mac apparatus. These efforts ushered in 2017 in style, making New Year’s Day the highest single-day sales for the App Store with an astounding $240 million in purchases.
