Facebook is taking another step to strengthen its social networking service, this time aiming to continually engage its users by extending their social circles. The tech giant is progressively rolling out a unique feature— “Discover People”—which encourages users to update their profiles, opening the door to comprehensive lists of upcoming local events, and those who will be attending them. This could even provide an opportunity to discover broader connections within your city, such as employment, interests, and more.
This move by Facebook is designed with the intent to stimulate an increased user connective experience on the platform to locals in their areas and also to introduce users to various events happening around them.
TechCrunch reveals that the “Discover People” feature, when available to a user, can be found nestled in the navigation section below ‘Friends’, ‘Events’, ‘Groups’, ‘Nearby Places’, among other options. Facebook is notorious for frequently adding, adjusting, and removing features to this section as a way of evaluating user engagement and interest. This is where some other recent augmentations such as ‘Offers’, ‘Find Wi-Fi’, and ‘Send or Receive Money’ can be found.
The “Discover People” tool is anticipated to be propelled to both iOS and Android users. At the time of writing, however, the rollout is still ongoing and has yet to reach all users across both platforms.
This latest development comes after the October implantation of the “Conversation Topic” feature—a tool designed to stimulate interaction among contacts by suggesting topics of discussion based on friends’ activities. This feature was noticed by sharp-eyed Messenger users and was lauded for its simplicity in igniting small talk.
Predictably though, this advanced Facebook development comes with its own share of potential drawbacks—user privacy being the primary concern. To fully utilize and benefit from the “Discover People” feature, users will inevitably expose more personal data to their local community, giving strangers potential access to learn more about them. The almost inevitable compromise here is that while it promotes interaction with local individuals and introduces potential connections, it simultaneously deflates the balloon of user privacy control.
This is an example that ow Facebook is adapting and expanding its platform features to ensure its prominence amid ever-evolving internet landscapes. As users, the pivotal question is, how much of our personal privacy are we willing to trade in pursuit of these connection opportunities?
