Disney Plus Now Has Over 50 Million Subscribers After Launching In A Dozen Nations

Disney+ launched in the United States, Canada and the Netherlands back in November 2019 and in 24 hours saw 10 million subscribe to it service. By February this year, that number grew to 28.6 million and this has now grown to 50 million in April when the streaming service launched in the UK, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, France, Switzerland and India. India alone accounts for 8 million of the 21.4 million subscribers increase in two months.

This number even beats Disney’s own internal forecast when it said it expect to have 60 to 90 million global subscribers by the end of 2024. In fact, as at November 2019, Disney is projected to have 101.2 million subscribers by 2025 and it looks like it’s on track to doing that.

The launch in many European nations comes as many people have been asked to stay at home in order to stem the spread of the novel Coronavirus dubbed COVID-19.

In a blog post, Kevin Mayer, Chairman of Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer & International said “We’re truly humbled that Disney+ is resonating with millions around the globe, and believe this bodes well for our continued expansion throughout Western Europe and into Japan and all of Latin America later this year. Great storytelling inspires and uplifts, and we are in the fortunate position of being able to deliver a vast array of great entertainment rooted in joy and optimism on Disney+.”

Apple TV Plus launched in 100 countries on November 1 for $4.99 a month, and that price includes streaming for the family, which presumably means multiple simultaneous streams. To build its subscriber base, Apple has since September bee giving out free one-year Apple TV+ subscription to anyone who buys a new Apple device. But Disney Plus besides its rich content comes with National Geographic as well. There’s even more because back in 2017, Disney had announced a deal to acquire much of Fox’s content which is now available to its users. They even took it a step further by partnering with Verizon in that new and existing 4G/%G subscribers got the service for free for a year.

That said Apple haven’t released any subscriber numbers yet but sometimes Apple doesn’t announce these numbers until a year.
