Elon Musk’s xAI Launches Grok 4.1 AI Model for All Users

Elon Musk’s company xAI just rolled out Grok 4.1 and this is turning out to be a much bigger update than most people expected. The new version is now available to everyone on the Grok website, on X (formerly Twitter), and through the mobile apps for both iPhone and Android. What makes this release interesting is that it’s not just about making things a little bit faster or slightly better. Grok 4.1 actually changes how the system handles conversations, understands emotions, and gives answers that are way more accurate than before.

xAI announced the introduction of the updated AI model in a newsroom post. Grok 4.1, interestingly, was quietly released between November 1 and 14. Users were given the option of choosing between two responses at random, one of which was the most recent model. According to xAI, Grok 4.1 was favoured by consumers 64.78% of the time over the previous model.

The biggest improvement in Grok 4.1 is that  they sometimes make up information and say it with complete confidence, as if they know exactly what they’re talking about when they actually don’t. This is called hallucination in the world of these systems, and it’s been a huge issue. With Grok 4.1, xAI says they’ve cut down these made-up answers by nearly three times compared to the previous version. That’s a massive improvement because it means people can actually trust what the system tells them instead of having to double-check everything it says.

What’s also different about Grok 4.1 is how it talks to you. The company spent a lot of time working on making it feel more like you’re having a real conversation with someone who understands what you mean, not just what you say. It picks up on the little hints in your questions, understands when you’re being sarcastic or emotional, and keeps the same personality throughout a long chat instead of suddenly changing how it sounds halfway through. This might seem like a small thing, but anyone who’s spent time talking to these systems knows how frustrating it can be when they suddenly start sounding completely different or miss the point of what you’re asking.

The way xAI tested this update is pretty interesting too. Instead of just releasing it and hoping people would like it, they quietly started giving some users the new version over a two-week period from the beginning of November. During that time, they compared how people responded to Grok 4.1 versus the older version without telling anyone which one they were using. The results showed that people preferred the new version almost 65 percent of the time, which is a pretty clear sign that the improvements actually matter in real conversations, not just in company tests.

Grok 4.1 also scored really well on something called EQ-Bench, which measures how well these systems understand emotions. It got a score of 1,586, which is a huge jump from the previous version’s score of 1,206. This matters because a lot of what we do when we talk to people involves reading between the lines and understanding feelings, not just processing words. When someone asks a question, there’s usually context and emotion behind it, and Grok 4.1 seems to be getting better at picking up on that and responding in a way that makes sense for the situation.

Another area where Grok 4.1 stands out is creative writing. The company tested it on various writing tasks, and it’s now one of the top options for things like storytelling, keeping a consistent voice, and writing with personality. This isn’t just useful for people who want to write stories or articles. It also means the system is better at explaining things in ways that are interesting to read instead of sounding like a boring instruction manual. Whether you’re asking it to help with work emails, explain a complicated topic, or come up with ideas for a project, having something that can write clearly and engagingly makes a real difference.

The update also comes with two versions. There’s the regular Grok 4.1, which is fast and handles most things you throw at it. Then there’s Grok 4.1 Thinking, which takes more time but can work through really complicated problems by actually thinking through the steps instead of just giving you the first answer that comes to mind. Both versions are available for free, though people who pay for the service get to use them more often without hitting limits. That’s a smart move because it means anyone can try out what the system can do without having to pay first.

The thinking version got the highest score overall, and even the faster version came in second. That’s significant because it means real people, not just company employees or tests designed by xAI, think Grok 4.1 gives better answers than the competition.

What makes all of this even more impressive is that xAI managed to improve accuracy while also making the system better at creative tasks and emotional understanding. Usually, when companies work on making these systems more accurate, they end up making them more rigid and boring. xAI seems to have found a way to do both, which is what people actually want. You need accuracy when you’re asking about facts or trying to get help with work. But you also want something that feels natural to talk to and doesn’t sound like a robot reading from a script.

The timing of this release is interesting too because there’s a lot happening in the world of these chat systems right now. Other companies are working on their own updates, and everyone’s trying to figure out how to make these tools more useful and trustworthy. By focusing on reducing made up  information and improving how the system understands and responds to people, xAI is addressing the two biggest complaints people have had about these tools. If Grok 4.1 really delivers on these improvements in everyday use, it could change how people think about which system they want to use.

For anyone who’s been using Grok or thinking about trying it, this update is available right now across all the places you can access it. You don’t need to do anything special to get it. The system will automatically use Grok 4.1 when you start a conversation, or you can specifically select it if you want to make sure you’re using the latest version. Whether it lives up to all the claims remains to be seen, but the early results and the way real users responded during testing suggest this is one of those updates that actually makes a noticeable difference in how useful the system is.

The creative writing for the model has also been improved. According to the business, the LLM outperformed Claude 4.5 Sonnet with a score of 1708.6 on the Creative Writing v3 test. Grok 4.1’s improved capacity now enables it to generate better responses for creative activities such as creating a social media post or composing a short tale. Finally, the company stated that the AI model hallucinates (generates false information) less than its predecessor.
