
Energizer has introduced a new line of coin lithium batteries designed to reduce some of the most serious risks when they’re accidentally swallowed, a problem that affects thousands of families in the US each year.
The new cells, branded as the Ultimate Child Shield version of Energizer’s 20mm coin lithium batteries, are engineered so they won’t cause burning in the esophagus if ingested. The batteries also contain a special dye that turns a child’s mouth blue when the battery comes into contact with saliva, offering a visible warning sign that something is wrong.
Coin cell batteries are widely used in compact electronics, but they can be dangerous if swallowed. Energizer cites more than 3,500 reported coin lithium ingestion incidents in the US each year. With conventional coin batteries, esophageal damage can begin within 15 minutes of ingestion, making early detection critical.
Energizer’s Ultimate Child Shield batteries take a two-pronged approach:
- Reduced burning in the esophagus: The batteries are designed so they don’t cause esophageal burning if a child swallows one, addressing one of the most severe immediate health risks.
- Built-in blue dye: A dye in the batteries will turn a child’s mouth blue when the cell contacts saliva, giving caregivers a visual cue that a battery may have been in the mouth and that medical attention is needed.
The idea is not to make coin cells harmless, but to mitigate the most acute danger window and help caregivers recognise an accident quickly enough to seek help.
The Ultimate Child Shield technology is available on Energizer’s 2032, 2025 and 2016 coin lithium batteries. These are among the most commonly used coin cell sizes and are found in a range of small devices, including watches and Apple’s AirTag trackers.
That means the new design can slot into many existing products without hardware changes, potentially extending the child-focused safety features to devices already in use in homes.
Energizer’s move reflects growing concern around battery safety in everyday gadgets, particularly those that children can access. While the company’s new batteries can’t eliminate all risk, they’re intended to lessen the immediate harm and make dangerous incidents more visible.
