Europe approves Apple’s $3 billion takeover of Beats

Apple is one crucial step closer to officially acquiring Beats, due to the recently sanctioned $3 billion merger by European authorities. This merger has been given the green light by the EU commission, stating it “poses no threat to competition, as the combined market share of Apple and Beats Electronics remains relatively low.” This could seem contradictory given Apple’s often dominant position in the market. However, according to the EU, Apple, despite absorbing Beats, will still face strong competition from other industry giants like Bose, Sennheiser, and Sony. Therefore, by no means would an Apple/Beats merger result in a headphone market monopoly, which was the EU’s main apprehension. The completion of the deal still hinges on approval from US regulators, but it’s widely anticipated that the US authorities will express a similar sentiment. On a different front, an unexpected legal hurdle has presented itself for Apple; Bose, a rival in the same field, has initiated legal action against it over noise-cancelling technology patents.
