Facebook Dating Adds AI to Help You Find Matches Faster

On Monday, Meta said that it would be integrating an AI assistant into Facebook Dating.

The social media giant Facebook rolled out some AI features for Facebook Dating that could make finding your perfect match way easier and way more effective.

The goal of this chatbot is to assist users in locating matches that are more suited to their needs. For instance, Meta might advise users to ask the AI to assist them polish their profile or to find “a Brooklyn girl in tech.”

What makes this interesting  is how it goes beyond the usual dating app approach. Most apps make you tick boxes and select from dropdown menus, which often doesn’t capture what you’re really looking for in a person. But Facebook’s AI lets you describe your ideal match in your own words, including interests and lifestyle choices.

Facebook didn’t stop at just the AI assistant. They’ve also introduced something called “Meet Cute” which takes a completely different approach to online dating. Instead of making you do all the searching and swiping, this feature automatically picks someone for you each week based on Facebook’s matching algorithm.

Meta additionally claims that its new Meet Cute function, which matches users with a weekly “surprise match” selected by its algorithm, is “helping people avoid swipe fatigue.”

What’s really refreshing is that Facebook is positioning these features as completely free alternatives to the premium services that other dating apps charge for. While apps like Tinder and Bumble make you pay to see who liked you or to get more matches, Facebook is trying to prove that better matchmaking doesn’t have to cost money.

According to the firm, hundreds of thousands of users in the 18–29 age range create Facebook Dating profiles every month, and the number of matches among this demographic has grown by 10% year over year. That is minor in comparison to rivals like Hinge, which has 10 million daily active users, and Tinder, which has over 50 million daily active users.

The AI assistant can also help improve your own dating profile, which is honestly something most people could use help with. We’ve all seen those profiles that are either completely blank or filled with clichés like “I love to laugh and have fun.” The assistant can suggest ways to make your profile more engaging and real, which will help you attract better matches.

Of course, there are some things to consider such as privacy because Facebook Dating uses information from your main Facebook profile, which means the AI has access to a lot of data about your interests, friends, and activities. While this helps with better matching, it also raises questions about privacy and how comfortable you are with Facebook knowing your dating preferences.

Research shows that in popular dating applications, AI elements are already commonplace. With their AI features, even more recent dating apps like Sitch have tried to set themselves apart.

Last year, Match Group, the company behind Tinder, Hinge, OKCupid, and other dating apps, partnered with OpenAI as part of its more than $20 million investment in artificial intelligence. Given Match Group’s financial difficulties it has lost almost 68% of its stock price in the last five years that is a significant bet.

Thus far, this investment has yielded products like as AI-powered matching and an AI photo selector tool for Tinder that scans your camera roll to assist in choosing profile images. A feature on Hinge allows users to utilise AI to enhance their answers to profile prompts.

Similar AI functions have been added by Bumble, and last year creator Whitney Wolfe Herd even raised eyebrows when she proposed that users might eventually have their own “AI concierges” who go on dates with other people’s AIs to assess compatibility.

For now, these features are rolling out gradually in the US and Canada, so you might not see them immediately. But if Facebook gets this right, it could change how we think about online dating entirely. Instead of turning dating into a numbers game, they’re trying to make it more personal and less overwhelming.

This year, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, has been working to increase Facebook’s “cultural influence.” The firm has also been creating reels for all Facebook videos and attempting to reduce Facebook spam.
