One of the changes Meta is making to Facebook reels is that it has improved the “recommendations engine” on the site, which “learns your interests quicker and shows you newer and more relevant reels.” Changes to the platform’s video experience to better compete with other short-form video apps like TikTok are part of Meta’s efforts to make Facebook relevant again this year. CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated in January that he’s “excited this year to get back to some OG Facebook.”
It is now observed that Facebook now displays 50% more reels from producers published the day you’re watching, for instance, in an attempt to let you see more recent videos, according to Meta. Using what it refers to as “friend bubbles,” which appear in the lower left corner of a video, the business is also making it simpler to detect whether a buddy has already liked a reel. You can tap a friend bubble to start a private chat if you want to talk to your friend about the video.
The experience on Facebook has traditionally revolved around seeing likes from your friends, and Meta says the company is still working on features that take us back to our origins, such as bubbles.
In its most recent earnings report, Meta disclosed that the company’s efforts to enhance its ranking algorithms have already resulted in a more than 20 percent rise in the amount of time spent on videos on Facebook year over year. Also Meta had declared in June that it will be removing the duration restrictions on reels on Facebook and turning all videos into reels.
Facebook also stated in June that all videos on the platform would be Reels and that the format’s duration limit would be lifted.
These actions shows Facebook’s efforts to increase its competition with TikTok by emphasising a short-form content while the application maintains social interaction and friend integration.
Despite improving Reels and friend connections, the platform is still a part of Meta’s ecosystem, with a focus on social communication and service integration. While maintaining the distinctive Facebook context, this shows a desire to extend the service’s user base and duration of use.
