Facebook’s iOS Update Rectifies Battery Drain Issue

Until recently, Facebook’s iOS users were in the grip of a significant battery drain predicament. The issue was attributed to the relentless activity of the app, which continued to refresh even when the ‘Background App Refresh’ feature was disabled. The quandary raised many eyebrows, and despite widespread reports and discussions, an official response from Facebook remained largely absent. That was until today, when Ari Grant, Facebook’s Engineering Manager, addressed the matter head-on.

In an assuring statement, Ari Grant confirmed that Facebook’s engineering team has indeed identified the problem areas and is in the process of rectifying them. The good news for affected users is that the solution comes in the form of an update that is scheduled to be rolled out sometime today. Consequently, users should anticipate the update prompt, especially those whose devices are not set to auto-update and may have to navigate the process manually.

Grant further elaborated on the nature of the problem. He metaphorically compared the glitch to a ‘CPU spin’ in Facebook’s network code – a situation akin to a child in a car repeatedly asking, “Are we there yet?” The continual inquiry, however, doesn’t expedite the process; instead, it drains the battery significantly. Fortunately, the process leading to this fuel-consuming and frustrating phenomenon has been addressed in the latest version of the app. The new improvements included in the update will kick in and start to ease up on the battery drain issue.

Interestingly, the battery drain issue was highlighted around the same time iOS 9 was released, which features improved battery life for newer versions of the iPhone. These improvements make the average newer versions of the iPhone last longer on a single charge – a great advantage that was somewhat negated by the Facebook app’s previous activity.

Today’s update is expected to bring a significant balance and make the app more battery-efficient aligning with Apple’s attempt to optimize power through iOS 9. User experience will be notably improved, without the constant nagging worry of their iPhone’s battery life being sapped by the Facebook app.

Stay tuned for further updates on this Facebook fix.
