Facebook May Merge WhatsApp And Messenger, WABetaInfo Reports

It isn’t new to hear or see that giant tech company Facebook is connecting its apps together. For instance, Facebook users can access their messages on their Instagram, besides there are already features that allow users to simultaneously post on both Instagram and Facebook at the same time.

According to reports by WABetaInfo, Facebook may be merging its Messenger app with WhatsApp such that messages can be accessible interchangeably on both platforms. The report by WABetaInfo says that Facebook is already testing this and that a tipster named Alessandro Paluzzi discovered that Facebook’s Messenger had a hidden WhatsApp chat feature. This is why it can be believed that Facebook might really be working on connecting the two apps. The report by WABetaInfo also made it known that the integration of WhatsApp and Messenger will be optional.

Up till now, Facebook has not said anything regarding the integration of the two apps and this has contributed to the spread of what is still a rumour. “This is a very complicated feature and it requires so much time. We’ve no idea if the plan to merge those services will continue or if it will be abandoned and discarded”, WABetaInfo’s report read. This therefore means that while Facebook might really be working on integrating the two apps, it can still be discontinued at any time, so people should not have high hopes, or feel threatened as the case may be. WhatsApp offers an end-to-end encrypted service; this therefore leaves some users uncertain about how Facebook plans to achieve this integration.

The report by WABetaInfo also stated that the integration doesn’t translate to Facebook collecting WhatsApp messages but “it is a local database that will start to contain in future those messages. Being WhatsApp messages end-to-end encrypted, it is likely that Facebook will import the Signal protocol to encrypt and decrypt messages, already used by WhatsApp”

WABetaInfo reported last week that the new WhatsApp update will enable every user in a group be able to send disappearing messages which was formerly a prerogative of group admins.

What do you think about having your WhatsApp messages on your Facebook and vice versa? Is it a smart decision by Facebook or one you would rather not have them do?
