Pushing past a benchmark of heightened significance, Facebook Messenger now boasts a dazzling user count of over 500 million. This monumental achievement is largely attributable to Facebook’s strategy of mandating mobile users to download the app if they wish to continue their instant messaging escapades.
Of course, the forced shift from Facebook’s main app to its standalone messenger app wrangled some resistance from users. Peter Martinazzi, Facebook’s director of product management, took the initiative to address these concerns. “Messaging is an integral part of how people maintain their connections. Since the Messenger’s inception in 2011, we’ve been relentlessly striving to provide people with a speedier and more emotive way to communicate.” Martinazzi affirmed, further highlighting the distinct role of the app. “Messenger was our first standalone app, focused singly on fulfilling the use case of messaging,” he said.
Martinazzi also foregrounded the company’s ongoing quest for enhancing the app’s functionality: “We’ve persistently strived to boost speed and reliability. Regular updates to Messenger roll out every two weeks, ensuring constant evolution and enhancement for user experience,” he further elaborated, signaling Facebook’s commitment to stick with the app in spite of some negative feedback.
As it turns out, Facebook isn’t alone in employing such tactics. Google, another tech giant, through its single account login feature for all its platforms, has previously created Google+ accounts for users—without their explicit consent. However, the difference is that Google doesn’t force you to sign up, but you automatically do so when availing any of their services.
The controversy surrounding Facebook’s forceful download implementation of the new messenger did dent its App Store rating, causing it to plummet to a mere one and a half stars.
But here’s the astounding revelation. Despite the hiccups, Facebook’s Messenger has accrued over 500 million users. Combined with its newly acquired WhatsApp platform boasting over 600 million users, Facebook’s total count of people utilizing its platforms for mobile messaging exceeds the 1 billion mark. This astonishing figure confirms Facebook’s status as the globe’s most significant mobile messaging service provider based on user count—a stellar achievement fitting for a company that has long prided itself as the world’s largest social networking site.
