Facebook’s Security Feature Alerts US Officials of Iranian Cyber Threats

Facebook, often under scrutiny for its security policies, boasts an innovative feature designed to notify users about potential state-sponsored cyber interference with their accounts. A recent feature in the New York Times describes how the social media giant alerted the US government about suspected Iranian cyber activities.

This security alert was triggered following the watershed nuclear accord designed to restrain Iran’s nuclear ambitions, sparking a subsequent surge in the country’s cyber-espionage activities as reported by NYT sources. Just a few weeks after the implementation of the new alert system, US State Department officials became recipients of a disconcerting message on their Facebook profiles:

“We believe your Facebook account and your other online accounts may be the target of attacks by state-sponsored actors,” read the automated warning. Facebook’s alert system was launched amidst growing user discontent over government decisions to access user data for security reasons – a fact illustrated by recent polls.

In the post-Snowden era, big tech companies including Yahoo, Google, Facebook and Apple, have scrambled to bolster encryption, aiming to thwart invasions from the American National Security Agency (NSA) and its global counterparts into consumer accounts.
