When the ambitious CEO of Facebook spoke about his vision for creating a comprehensive community, many assumed he was referring to the social network’s ongoing quest to connect the world digitally. However, in a surprising twist, it turns out that he had a far more tangible, physical community in mind: a place where people could not only connect and interact online, but also live, work, and play together.

Facebook unveiled its plans on Friday to expand its headquarters in the idyllic Menlo Park, California, into something much grander; a self-sufficient live-work-play campus called the Willow Campus. This project proposal includes an impressive 1,500 apartment units, along with a veritable marketplaces of grocery, retail, and office spaces.

A Facebook spokesperson elaborated on the new venture saying, “Part of our vision for the Willow Campus is to create a thriving neighborhood center complete with a host of long-awaited community services.” The plan includes building 125,000 square feet of retail space which will house essential amenities like a grocery store, pharmacy, and additional retail targeting the needs of the community.

In an inclusive move, these residential properties won’t be restricted to Facebook employees alone. Indeed, the spacious campus apartments will be open to all prospective tenants, making it a more integrated and engaging community. However, the office space will be specifically allocated for social media and related operations. The company plans to present its visionary proposal to Menlo Park officials with aspirations to complete the first phase of the project by 2021.

Wouldn’t living in a place where you can seamlessly blend your work, leisure and social activities sound appealing? This community-centric approach to urban development brings Facebook’s mission of fostering connection and interaction to a whole new level. Clearly, Facebook continues to surprise us with its ability to innovate in various domains.

With such exciting prospects at hand, we anxiously await the next unveiling from the social media titan; the suspense is akin to eagerly anticipating the unveiling of a novel gift. Stay tuned for updates to this undoubtedly pioneering project.
