The Nigerian Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the state-wide deployment of 4,000 additional telecoms towers to improve digital connectivity in disadvantaged areas.

Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, announced the approval following the FEC meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, which was presided over by President Bola Tinubu.

‎ Idris informed the audience that there is also an approval by FEC granted to the Ministry of Digital Communications and the Ministry of Finance to establish service centres for agricultural mechanisation and digital economy on the deployment of towers to places that are currently underserved.

The initiative aims to provide basic digital access and economic participation in underserved communities.

“Under that program, about 4,000 towers will be erected in underserved communities,” the minister explained.

“The presentation of the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy indicates that about 23 million Nigerians are currently underserved, meaning that they are unable to do anything.”

He claimed that insufficient internet connection has hampered economic involvement and simple communication in many distant locations.

“Indeed, this will also help in fighting insecurity and enhancing commerce and economic activity amongst the people of Nigeria,” Idris pointed out.

The minister stated that the council has given new directions to enhance project prioritising across government institutions.

Idris stated that the FEC approved the development of agricultural mechanisation service centres throughout geopolitical zones to promote year-round cultivation.

The minister stated that the decisions were consistent with the medium-term expenditure strategy given previously by the finance and budget ministers.

This program is consistent with Nigeria’s overarching goal of building its digital economy and providing universal, dependable, and cheap digital access to all citizens.
