Mozilla is expected to team up with China-based handset makers to produce Firefox OS-based smartphones for sales in Africa through Millicom’s subsidiaries, including Airtel, MTN South Africa and Tigo, according to sources at Taiwan’s handset supply chain.

The ecosystem of the Firefox OS has continued to expand and a total of 14 models are now available in over 30 markets in Asia, Latin America, Europe and Australia and will make inroads into Africa in 2015, according to Mozilla.

For the supply chain in Asia, Mozilla has been cooperating with China-based handset makers including TCL, ZTE, and Huawei. For India and Southeast Asia markets, its partners include India-based Spice and Intex. Mozilla also teamed up with Cherry Mobile to launch a Firefox model in the Philippines in November, priced only US$25.
Meanwhile, Movistar under Telefonica has been selling Firefox OS-based models built by TCL (Alcatel) in Costa Rica, Chile, Mexico and Argentina. Additionally, Megafon has brought Firefox phones into Russia and T-Mobile are marketing two models, the Fire E and Fire C, in Hungry and Montenegro, said Mozilla.

While most Firefox smartphones available currently are entry-level models, KDDI plans to introduce a mid-range Firefox model, built by LG Electronics, into the Japan market soon, according to supply chain sources.
