Purchasing a new phone often involves a multitude of considerations, but there’s usually one factor that comes to mind before all others—camera quality. It’s not surprising, given our proclivity to chronicle life’s moments in vibrant, digital detail. The clincher for many consumers? The powerful optic number known as the camera’s megapixel count. Beyond this, other aspects of a phone are meticulously analyzed before finally parting with the cash.
Apple Inc., renowned for their high-quality products, recently announced its intention to further improve the camera power on its future iPhones. According to a report from Digitimes, Apple has purportedly booked production capabilities for lens modules exceeding 12 megapixels at a new Taiwan-based facility currently being constructed by Largan Precision.
The aforementioned Digitimes report elaborates, stating that only Largan fulfills Apple’s stringent yield rate requirements for producing over 600 million lens modules monthly. Largan is slated to begin production in October 2017. The report also quotes Largan’s CEO, Lin En Ping, who projected that as more smartphone manufacturers adopt dual-lens cameras, 3D sensing, and larger aperture sizes, the demand for lens modules will correspondingly increase to meet their clients’ mounting needs.
The iPhone’s camera, a pivotal component of Apple’s iconic product, is consistently tweaked and refined by the tech giant to meet the ever-expanding expectations of its customers. Consequently, a breakthrough 16MP or even higher camera specification could be in store for us in the near future, given how seemingly advanced preparations are already. Nevertheless, the imminent iPhone 8 and iPhone 7S Plus will sport the tried-and-trusted 12-megapixel camera system. Alongside these offerings, Apple is also set to unveil the aptly named iPhone X to celebrate their 10-year iPhone anniversary on September 12, 2017. This special event will be hosted in the Steve Jobs Theatre located within the newApple ‘Spaceship’ headquarters, and will also showcase products like the Apple TV with 4K Resolution and many more intriguing gadgets.
