Gemini Is Getting Spotify and WhatsApp Support Through Extensions

One of Google‘s main goals for this year has been Gemini, which is being progressively included into all of the company’s services and has even taken the place of Google Assistant as the default on Android. Nevertheless, a number of essential capabilities that Google Assistant once provided have been absent from Gemini despite the change. Google recently added support for Google Assistant Routines as part of their efforts to close these gaps, and it now seems like they are aiming to further enhance Gemini’s functionality.

There have been reports of additional features being added to the Android Gemini virtual assistant. As a Google Assistant substitute, the operating system incorporated an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot. The Gemini AI assistant could browse the web, produce content, and respond to questions thanks to its AI skills. However, it was not particularly helpful for ordinary use cases because of its restricted third-party app connectivity. The tech behemoth modified it by adding extensions that gave the AI chatbot access to certain apps. According to reports, Gemini will soon be able to use Spotify and WhatsApp extensions.

The Android Authority article claims that tipster AssembleDebug discovered the additional features in the Google app for Android beta version 15.40.31.29. Beta testers won’t be able to locate this feature because it hasn’t been released yet. However, a new popup card stating that Gemini Extensions are replacing Google Assistant activities allegedly surfaced once the extension was activated. It is said that Gemini app activity is utilized for tasks like selecting a contact. Additionally, users must maintain the Gemini app activity enabled in order to use extensions.

Google is now testing Gemini extensions for Google Messages, Spotify, and WhatsApp on Android, according to a new leak from Assemble Debug (via Android Authority). In the past, Google Assistant Actions let users communicate with applications directly, such as messaging a contact on WhatsApp. Even though Gemini can already use Google Assistant to accomplish comparable tasks, it is now getting its own native extensions, which should allow for more seamless interactions and in-depth integration with these applications.

The leaker was able to enable the extensions on the Google app for Android (beta version 15.40.31.29), although the feature is still being evaluated. According to the screenshot, Gemini extensions are replacing Google Assistant activities. Additionally, it means that in order to provide a better tailored experience, Gemini will learn which extensions you use for various activities, such as chatting or phoning specific people.

According to the article, the software would also track and determine which app the user likes to use to text or phone a certain contact. Gemini is believed to choose the preferred app by default based on this information. According to reports, you may modify this choice and disable any extension under the activity menu.

It has been claimed that the tipster successfully activated the WhatsApp plugin. According to reports, the new Gemini extension would allow users to utilize voice instructions, similar to Google Assistant, to send text messages to the designated contact. The Gemini assistant interface allegedly displays an app card upon invocation, which can be clicked to open the app and view the message. According to reports, the extension also enables users to conduct audio calls using the app and edit messages before sending them.

Regarding Spotify, it has been claimed that the plugin is compatible with both free and Premium customers. According to reports, users may ask Gemini to play a song from Spotify, and it will select and start playing the music automatically. The Spotify card is supposed to emerge when the AI executes the instruction, much like WhatsApp, and the user may tap on the card to enter the chosen music within the app.

There is currently no official indication on when the functionality will be made available to the general public; it is still under testing. But it’s probably not far away because the leaker was able to activate it with a few adjustments. In any case, it’s encouraging to see Google finally giving Android’s Gemini the consideration it deserves.
