Preparing Your Tech Devices for Rising Summer Temperatures

As the proverbial mercury rises, meeting the onset of summer heat, the thermostat inside your tech devices does the same. Sweltering temperatures can stress the vital components of your gadgets, making it increasingly challenging for them to maintain optimal operational temperatures. From computers to peripherals, the unexpected summer heat can often be the sour cherry on top of an already complex battle of maintaining cool temperatures. However, staying ahead of the increasing warmth by preparing your tech gadgets for upcoming hot seasons can help you bypass this obstacle. Here are a handful of essential tips to optimize your tech devices to beat the looming heatwaves.

laptop cooling

Banishing the Dust

Dust is a perennial nemesis for tech devices, causing mayhem whether your weapon of choice is a laptop or a desktop computer. Dust accumulation through vents and crevices is a common hazard. However, mitigating its effects is far from an uphill battle. Arm yourself with an air compressor, but remember to avoid using the highest setting that can potentially cause harm to fans or even displace capacitors. Even on lower power settings, ensure that the fans are secured and stationary during the cleaning process to prevent unnecessary wear and tear on the bearings. For sensitive devices like laptops, using canned compressed air—readily available in most electronics stores—is often the safest method of dust removal.

While your PC is deconstructed and open, it is an excellent opportunity to replace the thermal compound on your CPU and GPU. Over time, the cyclical heating and cooling of your devices can cause the thermal compounds to dry out, diminishing their thermal conduction properties.

Embracing the Wind

Cleaning your devices can improve the thermal conditions inside the casing. Consider further fortifying your line of defense by upgrading the cooler and incorporating additional fans. Copper CPU coolers, particularly those with the popular tower design, can sometimes be found for a bargain. In general, these lower-priced models can often provide better cooling performance than the stock coolers provided by manufacturers like AMD and Intel.

pc fans

Establishing airflow in your PC casing is an affordable and effective strategy for counteracting thermal stress. This can be achieved by placing a fan at the front of the case to draw in cool air and another at the back to expel the warmed air, creating an effective draft circulation.

The Peripheral Circuit

Unfortunately, the escalating summer heat can extend its effects beyond your PC, impacting peripherals like printers, scanners, and projectors. The toner used in your printer cartridges can harden with prolonged exposure to excessive heat; checking and replacing the toner in a timely manner can save you from expensive replacements of your printing equipment.

In the case of a scanner, the heat generated by the device’s light source can lead to warped scans and cause potential issues with the scanner’s rails. Maintaining your scanner in a suitable environment with adequate cooling can be the best solution towards mitigating these issues.

Projector

Projectors, which operate at significantly high temperatures, also require careful consideration. While most projectors are fitted with fans capable of maintaining their optimal performance, certain manufacturers may cut corners, resulting in inefficient cooling components. Identifying this issue in advance allows for rectification measures such as replacing the internal fan or adding an external one.

As we face escalating temperatures around the globe, keeping our tech devices cool is becoming a key facet of their longevity. Preparing our electronic devices to navigate these changing weather conditions is thus more crucial than ever.
