Glo Launches 4G Service Nationwide And Here’s What To Expect With Respect To Price Plans

Globacom also known as Glo says it has rolled out a “nationwide” 4G service making it the first of its kind in Nigeria. To be clear though, the service will roll out in areas like Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Benin, Eket, Jos, Warri, Yola and Zaria for now with plans to further expand to other areas on future.

With respect to new data plans, 18,000 Naira will give you 90GB and this is valid for a month and there are plans as low as 1000 Naira. Here’s what Glo says you should expect;

Naira Data Value in GB
5001.6
1,0003.2
2,0007.5
2,50010
4,00018
5,00024

There’s even one for 50 Naira.

This announcements makes Glo the third public switch telephone network (PSTN) company to announce 4G service after MTN and nTel. The latter launched its services earlier this year in Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt and has expand into more cities as we speak.

Now if you’re reading this and wondering why operators start with areas like Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt, the reason is simple. Business!! It’s quite expensive to deploy 4G infrastructure over a large area and operators would rather launch services of this nature in areas that rank high on the economic index and put simply, they would rather invest initially in areas that can bring returns quicker than others.

That said, Nigeria has an encouraging internet penetration outlook with more investors looking to take advantage of the broadband markets which is believed to still be a far cry from what it should be in Nigeria. Nigeria had a 10 percent broadband penetration of just 10 percent in 2015 according to the Dr. Eugene Juwah who is the former Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Remember though, 4G services from a mobile operator requires a 4G enabled device too so just in case you don’t seem to be enjoying this service, now might be the time to replace your device.

While we celebrate and welcome the expansion of 4G services to more Nigerian, it’s also true that the world is now looking towards 5G which is expected to be 100 times faster than the current fast 4G.
