There is some news as Google may soon give users the option to change their Gmail address while keeping access to past emails and stored files.
Google claims to be gradually rolling out to all its users and the ability to modify the email address associated with their Google account, including switching from their current Gmail address to “a new email address that ends in gmail.com,” according to a Hindi version of the Gmail support website, which was first noticed by the Google Pixel Hub group on Telegram and later reported in 9to5Google.
It says that users can use either their old or new Gmail address to log into Google services if they decide to switch, and their old Gmail address should continue function as an alias . For another year, though, you won’t be able to add any more Gmail addresses to your account.
As of Sunday afternoon, the English-language version of the support website still says, “If your account’s email address ends in @gmail.com, users usually can’t change it.” Instead, it recommends either changing the name associated with the address or creating a new address and then moving contacts and emails over.
The change has not been formally announced by Google. Users can’t typically modify their @gmail.com address, according to the English version of the support page. Google has only permitted address modifications for addresses other than gmail.com thus far.
Google was contacted by an independent media firm to seek confirmation and clarity on this and there is no feedback yet on this as of the writing of this however if there is one, it will be updated.
Users will modify it through your account settings whenever the feature (hopefully) becomes widely available. Go to Manage your Google account > Personal info > Google Account email after logging into your Google account. You’ll have to wait if you don’t see the option to modify it.
