Earlier this week, Google hosted The Android Show: I/O Edition. Google showcased a number of new features that will soon be available on Android phones, the most prominent of which is Android 17 and its new suite of AI capabilities, Gemini Intelligence.

The Android 17 update, which is presently undergoing beta testing, is anticipated to be released for Pixel smartphones in the upcoming weeks. The company presented a new OS verification method for phones that would be included with the Android 17 release, in addition to other news. According to the corporation, it will aid in reducing the spread of unapproved and altered Android versions that have recently been released by hackers.

Google made this recent revelation about the new Android OS Verification tool in a blog post. Devices running Android 17, which is still undergoing beta testing, will have access to the feature. But in a few weeks, the official version will also be made available, beginning with the Google Pixel phones. According to the company, Android OS Verification enables consumers to confirm the OS’s legitimacy if it is genuinely from Google’s source.

Although the majority of Android devices are certified by the Google body named Google Mobile Services (GMS), a sign of their legitimacy that provides a “secure and reliable experience,” Google stated that it has observed that “some bad actors” have been disseminating unofficial versions that are not genuine on the Android devices that are made to resemble the genuine operating system. Google pointed out that the fake versions of Android trick users by imitating the original Android design and brand.

However, fake and counterfeit Android versions “secretly” jeopardize the security and privacy of users by compromising the integrity of Android phones and other devices. Users will therefore be confident that their device is running an official and widely circulated build of the software by utilizing the new tool, which will be launched soon, in the coming weeks. The new Android OS Verification tool will first be accessible on Google Pixel devices, as was already reported.

The business has said that it is also launching a new append-only ledger, which will be accessible to the general public, to supplement the Android OS verification feature. The ledger is also said to provide verifiable “cryptographic proof” of the legitimacy of Google apps, including the core GMS APIs. The business had emphasized that it did not distribute a “Google-signed” app if it was not accessible on its new “Source of Truth” ledger.

The tool is one component that has a broader security context of Android 17; this tool represents an element of a comprehensive set of enhancements designed to fight and tackle  digital fraud.

Below are the features and functionalities that every user should be looking forward to, which is also what will be launched in the coming days.
